Recamier Reading Corner by Inbar Paradny Kalomidi

admin

There are few activities as relaxing and stimulating as reading. Those who enjoy it so much usually have their own special reading corner within their crib, a place where they like to get lost in the fascinating words of who knows what authors.

Helsinki-based designer Inbar Paradny Kalomidi came up with a fantastic way of enjoying a good book in a versatile, modern environment. His Recamier Reading Corner gives a new meaning to the activity of reading a book. This is a perfect combination between a comfortable chaise-longue and a shelving system. Designed to offer a comfortable position, the recamier can be taken out of its place in the bookcase. A sinuous shape completes the round corners design of the simple, white bookcase and gives it an interesting twist.

With this type of furniture item, reading will seem more intense than ever, as the ergonomics of this design ensures maximum body comfort and a high level of concentration. A light blanket and a comfortable pillow is all you need to feel like this space belongs only to you as long as you enjoy the adventures of the main character in your book. The uncommon reading corner looks perfect for the living room and when it is not in use by one of the passionate “readers” within the home, it can serve as a regular sitting item. With the shelves near by, all of the user’s favorite books are easy to reach and so are other items that can be used during reading intermissions. Keep your books close, maybe a cup of tea and enjoy the wonders and luxury of escaping into fantasy lands of your choosing.

Suita from Vitra

admin

The Suita Sofa is part of a large range that includes many individual pieces of furniture. They can all be mixed and matched for use in many different spaces in numerous ways. Suita pieces can be harmoniously integrated into existing arrangements and also create a collage with other pieces in the Suita range.

Suita comes in two different basic versions – with soft or firmer seat cushions – that serve to meet customers‘ various comfort needs. For the softer version, customers can choose between classic or pointed cushions. For the firmer version, the backrest cushions all have a classic cushion shape.

Some pieces in the Suita range can be fitted with a component that lengthens the backrest, which not only serves to offer the head more support, but also creates a kind of barrier from both noise and visual stimuli.

Shelves that are mounted on the back make the Suita Sofa, when placed away from walls, the perfect place for briefly working on a laptop when combined with a chair. If placed against a wall, the shelf creates additional storage or decoration space.

The Suita platform is very tightly upholstered and comes in two sizes. As a piece that is a cross between a table and an ottoman, the platform can be used for trays, books and magazines, or for tired feet.

Small Apartment Interior Design Ideas

admin
Categories: Furniture,Interior

Small apartment decorating is always a challenge. Inspiring solutions can be found in many areas: from storage to color composition and from decorating to using modern and versatile furniture with multiple use. Searching for small apartment solutions can take up a lot of time, but be prepared to stumble upon so many ideas that it will be hard to choose the right one for your home.

Start with making a list of the things you need, like storage facilities and take into account that, by using colors, light and mirrors, you can create the illusion of a bigger space. A small apartment can be just as relaxing and comfortable as an apartment with a large floor plan if you use functional furniture and unconventional space delimitations.

A personalized small apartment solution can come from the decision of using custom made furniture that will help your small apartment reach its full potential. Custom furniture can be an effective solution for maximising small spaces in apartments; creating a “wow-factor” with a statement piece; custom designer homes with specific décor requirements.

Try to use every available space and think out of the box. Use sliding doors and mirrors to hide storage space. In the bedroom, use the underside part of your bed for keeping linens or even consider a bunk bed and use the lower part as office space. There are many ideas that can help you decorate a small apartment and a good interior designer can customize the space in a way that you and your family can connect to, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Artistic furniture design by Valentin Loellmann

admin

This unique furniture collection by German designer Valentin Loellmann cannot really be assigned to any style. The collection got the name “M.&Mme” and is based on the idea of family of a design “dynasty” that is evocative of the contemporary Dutch school of design.

The pieces can be regarded as art installations, a post’ modern interpretation of classical wood furniture that falls just short of elegance, giving it up for naive design. Surreal, burlesque, Alice-in-wonderland-like comes to mind in regard of these very individual pieces. The beautiful old bankirai wood, reinforced and framed in a polyester skin with the appearance of white plaster looks sophisticated, playful and rustic. It is the contrast between the natural and the “technical” that sets the tone of past meets present and lends itself to an embedded narrative.

Launched with only three pieces the collection will grow and evolve over time. While their forms or characteristics change, a common element or ‘mood’ will always connect the new pieces to the original ones. Not the most practical of pieces, but would make for a unique and artistic lobby.

Loellmann, looked to forms of traditional craftsmanship when designing this collection where every piece is unique and intended to have a narrative that is both independent and interconnected to the rest of the pieces.

After the graduation in 2009 Loellmann founded his own studio and started a workplace where he creates his own projects as well as projects for clients. For him, the challenge lies in cultivating an alternative perspective on the things around and this serves as a source of inspiration for designer. This is both his task and his challenge to express the experience and impressions in his work.

Power of the coffee table

admin
Categories: Furniture,Interior

The coffee table is an oft overlooked piece of furniture, but the right coffee table can make or break a living room. But what makes a coffee table a coffee table? And what modern styles are out there?

Possibly the most defining feature of a coffee table is its long, low shape. It normally has shorter legs than a side table or a bistro table, and it is usually oval or rectangle as opposed to circular or square in shape. This is so that it can be placed in front of a sofa and compliment its long form and be at just the right height for easy access to anything on its surface.

However, not all coffee tables are created equal. These basic features don’t come close to describing a truly modern coffee table. Some are tall, some are short; some are wide, some are thin; some are made of wood, some are made of glass; and all of them can compliment their surroundings if placed appropriately.

You can have a coffee table that matches a handful of side tables, or you can create an eclectic look using a variety of shapes and styles. The coffee table you choose can be made of glass, wood, chrome, plastic or any material of your choosing, as long as it is sturdy and stable.

A coffee table is an integral part of a living room, because it centers all the other furniture. Your sofa set will pop if you incorporate the right coffee table – but it could fizzle if you choose the wrong one. Coffee tables are also used as a gathering place, so you’ll likely want yours to be warm and inviting.

Consider size, placement, texture and material when picking out your coffee table – you’ll thank yourself later.

Clifford Furniture collection

admin

Clifford Furnitureis a youthful designer who isn’t afraid to experiment. He started in design by working with wood at the young age of 15, and hasn’t looked back since. This sparked his interest in working with as many of native species of wood as possible. Whilst learning about the working properties of wood he became interested in furniture making. With a relatively small number of designs under his belt, Clifford still has to prove himself – but his beginnings are definitely promising.

Look at the Conversation Seating above. There is nothing better than having an in-depth conversation that piques your interest and stimulates your mind, and Clifford pounces on this idea with gusto. The two chairs are joined near the base, facing each other, at a comfortable distance for either couples or strangers to make eye contact and have a deep discussion.

Below is Clifford’s Rocket Table. It features a retro-modern design that is a bit space-agey – hence the name Rocket Table. We love its mix of wood and glass, and the texture in the stripes that circle around the base. This would look wonderful paired with a low platform white leather sofa.

Clifford’s designs use simple lines and show a willingness to experiment with material and style. He is still finding his footing as a designer, and we look forward to seeing what he has in store for us in the future.

Stool by Tim Mackerodt

admin

Designer Tim Mackerodt of Germany will show his lamp and stool made of folded concrete at DMY International Design Festival in Berlin next month. Called FALT.series, the objects are made from thin sheets of fibre-reinforced concrete that’s rolled out and formed over moulds.

Mackerodt completed the project while studying at Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany and will exhibit alongside fellow students at DMY Berlin.

In order to produce FALT.lamp and FALT.stool, fiber-reinforced concrete from the company g.tecz is rolled out and manually folded on flexible molds. Thin walled objects of the FALT.series produce shapes and surfaces not replicable via conventional concrete casting methods. The lampshade of FALT.lamp has a material thickness of only 2.7 mm and therefore weights less than 1.400 grams.

In contrast, FALT.stool shows the structural strength of the folded concrete. All legs are only held in place by a layer of 5 mm fiber-reinforced concrete. The technique of folding concrete opens a new field for the application of high performance concrete in design.

FALT.series will be exhibited at Material Vision 2011 at the stand of G.tecz (Hall 4.1 L32) and can be viewed at the DMY 2011 together with other students from Kunsthochschule Kassel at “Liebling, lass uns nach Kassel fahren”.

Tim Mackerodt was born in 1984 in Kassel. Worked for 12 month in South Africa. Finished BA in International Business Studies in 2008 and spend six month at the Düsseldorf office of DDB group Germany. Enrolled for product design at Kunsthochschule Kassel since 2009.
